New Orleans -- Police say a 13-year-old girl was abducted off a street corner and then raped by three men Sunday night.

It happened at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and North Miro Street in the Esplanade Ridge neighborhood of New Orleans.

Tara Leon lives just three blocks from Esplanade Avenue and frequently walks this stretch of road to and from work. "It's hard around here, being a black woman alone walking the street that time of night. I gotta watch myself so think about a child, a teenager, don't know what's going on," Leon commented.

Police say three men approached the child from behind around 10:00 p.m. Sunday, forced her into a car and took her to an unknown location where she was raped.

Reacting to the news, resident Pat Perry said, "There are a lot of children in this area that walk the sidewalks. It's a little frightening."

Frightening indeed for parents of teenage girls who live in the area, like Ramona Vasquez.  "I mean it's terrible, like as a parent and having a 14-year-old, it's scary. It's scary because I have never heard anything in regards to that before happening here," Vasquez said.

Many people who live near where the rape allegedly occurred said Sunday night was bustling with activity as thousands were making their way home after the free Jimmy Buffet concert in the Quarter. They say someone had to have seen what happened to the teenager.

"A lot of activity, people were walking, they were happy. I can't even imagine it," Perry said.

Police are releasing few details and haven't said if there were in fact any witnesses to the crime.

In the meantime, parent Ramona Vasquez is keeping a closer eye on her kids saying, "I have a lot of supervision you know in what they're doing and where they are. Once it starts getting dark, they're not outside at all."

Others are beefing up their own security until the police make an arrest and solve this crime.

In addition to the alleged rape of the 13-year-old girl, police confirm another rape took place three hours later and just five blocks away.  40-year-old Terry King has been arrested for that crime.

Police say the two rapes are not related.
